HarnWare uses a Microsoft database access technology known as DAO. Unfortunately Microsoft has issued the following statement:
“Some technologies, including DAO (Data Access Object) and the Jet Red database engine, will not be ported to 64-bit Windows.” See, for example, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384190.aspx
To replace all of our DAO database code in HarnWare, HarnVis, Cable Designer, PartNum, etc. would require a significant amount of work.
To date only one user has requested support for HarnWare on 64 bit Windows. In order to justify the cost of replacing all of our DAO database code we will need to demonstrate a significant demand among our users. Please contact us if you wish to run HarnWare on 64 bit Windows.

We initially posted this message and contacted our users in August 2007 asking if they had any plans to introduce Windows 64 bit. However, it has only been in the past four or five months that we started to receive requests for a Windows 64 bit version of HarnWare.
HarnWare doesn't currently run on the 64 bit versions of Windows XP or Vista but we are now working on the necessary upgrade. This involves a significant amount of software development work. We expect the upgraded version of HarnWare able to run on 64 bit versions of Windows XP and Vista will be released in June 2010. However, we should be able to provide a beta test version of the software by December 2009. Rest assured that we are working on a solution and we are fully committed to ensuring HarnWare will be compatible with the 64 bit versions of Windows XP and Vista and the next version, Windows 7 which is due for release by Microsoft at the end of 2009.
Since HarnWare was first released in 1995 we have upgraded the software to maintain compatibility with a number of 16 and 32 bit versions of Windows and Visio including Windows 3.1, 95, NT, 98, 2000, XP and Vista and Visio 3, 4, 4.1, 4.5, 5, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007. Although the work required for the 64 bit versions of Windows is more substantial than any of these previous changes, as you can see we have a long history of maintaining HarnWare and we hope that our track record will give you confidence that we will deliver a 64 bit version of HarnWare as planned.
Please contact us if you'd like to discuss this in more detail. |

| Unfortunately some slippage has occurred to this project, partly due to internal challenges and partly due to the delayed release of the 2010 versions of Microsoft Visual Studio, Office and the 64 bit dataproviders for Microsoft Access database files. We now expect the current 64 bit HarnWare development project to be complete and tested by August 2010. |
