HarnWare V5.2 was released in January 2006. Among the many new features and enhancements are:
-
Harnvis - 3D System for Visualising Harness Designs
Harnvis is a 3D modelling system for visualising harness designs generated by the
Tyco HarnWare PC Harness Design
System. Harnvis automatically generates to-scale 3D models which provide "virtual
prototypes" of harnesses designed using HarnWare.
The user can see what a harness will look like with lengths, diameters and parts shown to scale.
This reduces the potential for errors.
-
Lay Up Board Design
Lay-up boards are often used to help assemble harnesses in production quantities, especially
commercial harnesses. A laying-up board is essentially a to-scale harness drawing. However,
long harness legs are usually bent around to fit them into a reasonable area, rather than having
straight lines unnecessarily extending the width or height of the laying up board.
HarnVis can automatically generate a to-scale drawing of the harness. The user can bend long legs
to fit into areas of the lay-up board design.
- Weight Estimator
HarnWare now includes an option to estimate the weight of a harness. In an increasing number of applications,
for example, aerospace and motor sport, weight is a critical design factor. This new
facility could save a significant amount of time, especially when a number of design alternatives have to be
evaluated.
- User Parts Library
The HarnWare product database contains Tyco Electronics'
products and a huge selection of circular military connector part numbers and related data. Many users have
requested a means of adding non-Tyco parts to the HarnWare
database such that they can selected by HarnWare. The material
systems approach used for selecting products from the database and the need for proven compatibility precludes this
option, but to assist users in adding non-Tyco parts special part number balloons are available that enable parts
listing by HarnWare. Users have also created stencils of non-standard
parts which is an ideal option provided part number range and permutations are small. The User Parts Library adds a
further, more powerful option with which users can construct their own database allowing them to search and construct
part numbers for non-Tyco parts. The database can contain hyper-links to other documents, drawings and web sites.
- Standard Cable Database
A machine built multi-core cable rather than a hand built version, is often a cost effective option for wiring a harness.
It is worth considering the use of a multi-core cable if production quantities of point to point harnesses or sections of
branched harnesses are long enough to justify a multi-core cable design. Multi-core cables can also be used to eliminate
transitions in a harness. By making the individual legs of a branched harness into multi-core cables, and terminating them
in a connector boot, the labour required to hand lay wires and install braid, tube and transition can be eliminated. The
Standard Cable Database contains information on many standard cable designs and can be searched for a match or close match
to the harness wiring requirements. Appropriate cables can be used in the design and HarnWare will adjust the parts list and labour estimate accordingly. Users can also define their own multi-core
cable designs using standard Tyco wire and fillers from the HarnWare
database. These designs, along with cross-section drawings can be added into the cable database.
- New Product Additions
The following are a selection of the new products that have been added:
- Hexashield
The Hexashield adaptor range is designed to terminate individual cable shields onto a connector shell with complete 360°
protection. Excellent shielding performance makes Hexashield well adapted to today's HIRF requirements. It features
simple installation and maintainability and represents a major improvement over the pigtail method of screen termination.
- Bandstrap Adaptors
Fit most circular military connectors, shielded and unshielded, straight, 45º and 90º configurations, wide range
of material and finish options. Bandstrap Adaptors feature a corrosion-resistant steel band, which is installed around the
braid, tightened using an installation tool, and secured with a special buckle design that allows the band to be held under
tension.
- Conduit Harness Systems
HarnWare now includes facilities to select conduit and compatible adaptors and transitions.
- KTKKs
The KTKK database has been enhanced and extended.
- New Harness Material Systems
Harness material systems 30 and 7xx have been added. System 30 is suitable for military ground vehicles, marine applications and
aerospace as well as ground support equipment, communication and test equipment. It is suitable for high temperature environments such as engine
compartments where low profile moulded parts save space and weight. The three new 7xx material systems are chemical warfare survivable systems for
operating temperatures up to 200°C.
- Enhanced Wiring Schematic and Schedule
The HarnWare schematic and schedule forms have been redesigned to make them easier to use and over 20 new options have been added.
- Enhanced Connector Facilities
The connector selection, part number construction and planform facilities and database have been improved and extended.
- Product Information Listings
Links to the Tyco Electronics web site and product catalogue are now included to enable the user to quickly access more product information.
